Good Different Classroom and Writing Resources

Poetic Techniques

This list includes sample poetic techniques used in GOOD DIFFERENT, and specific poems that employ those techniques. This is a great reference for educators seeking to cover specific poetic techniques in the classroom.

Discussion and Journaling Questions

This includes questions you can use as classroom discussion questions, or individual journaling reflection questions for students.

Poetry Prompts

This includes some poem prompt ideas! Many are tied to a specific poem, so I recommend reading and discussing the poem in class, then using that as a launching point into the prompt. After writing, if you have time, consider inviting students to share—if they feel comfortable to! Feel free to use these poems as launching points for journal reflections, or as poetry prompts.

Autism Resources

This is a list of resources I’ve found personally helpful, including autistic tools, books by autistic writers, and resources for autistic folks. The last section includes resources for educators—particularly note A Novel Mind, which is a fantastic neurodivergent resource for educators.

World Read Aloud Day Video

Since I am unavailable in 2023 for WRAD but have received requests for my availability, I thought I’d make this brief video that you are welcome to share in classrooms! Here I introduce myself, the book Good Different, and read a couple poems from the book. Students with questions are encouraged to email me through my website. Also consider reaching out for a virtual author visit, or Q&A with students who have read the book!

Scholastic Resource Guide: Engaging Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) through Children’s Books

An educator guide on how to incorporate SEL in the classroom, including exercises, prompts and reading discussions—including Good Different as a title that’s great to use for this topic!
